# AWS adds separate encryption keys for OpenSearch indexes

Amazon OpenSearch Service now lets customers encrypt individual indexes at rest with separate customer managed AWS Key Management Service keys, AWS announced. The feature allows data belonging to different tenants or carrying different sensitivity levels to use separate keys within the same domain.

Customers enable the feature by selecting Native encryption mode and specifying a customer managed key when creating a new domain. They can then register additional keys for individual indexes.

The feature is available for domains running OpenSearch version 3.3 or later in 14 AWS Regions. It carries no additional feature charge; standard AWS KMS and OpenSearch Service charges apply.
