Ollama has added its first speech-generation models to its Mac app, allowing users to turn text into audio locally. Gradium's Phonon models generate speech in real time, so users can listen while a response is being produced.

The models support English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese, with separate language models and a multilingual option. They are available for Apple Silicon Macs running Ollama 0.40.11 or later.

Ollama says its implementation generated speech 35% faster than Gradium's implementation in tests on a MacBook Pro with M5 Max, while matching the reference implementation's word error rate. Windows and Linux speech support is still forthcoming.
