Eurosystem plans round-the-clock Pontes settlement in 2028

Eurosystem plans round-the-clock Pontes settlement in 2028 Image: Primary
The Eurosystem plans to extend operating hours for its Pontes tokenised-asset settlement service significantly by mid-2027 and introduce 24/7/365 availability in 2028, ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said on 29 October. It also plans to offer immediate settlement finality on the Eurosystem's distributed ledger platform as early as 2027. Pontes has connected market distributed ledger platforms with TARGET Services since 21 September, allowing wholesale transactions in tokenised assets to settle in central bank money. The planned extensions would broaden that service's operating window. Cipollone said the existing T2S securities settlement platform would continue operating alongside tokenised platforms, with interoperability needed to avoid new technological silos.
