# IBEC-led photoswitchable eye-drop compounds restore light responses in blind animal models

A consortium led by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia developed photoswitchable small-molecule drugs that restored important visual responses in animal models of blindness, SciTechDaily reported. The findings appear in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (DOI: 10.1021/jacs.5c18611).

In diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa, photoreceptors die while much of the downstream retinal network can survive. Conditions involving photoreceptor degeneration affect about 200 million people worldwide and contribute more than US$400 billion annually in healthcare expenses and lost productivity, the article said.

The compounds are designed to mimic photoreceptor function and reactivate surviving retinal circuits after photoreceptor loss, restoring responses to ordinary light without gene therapy or implanted devices. Prior paths include mutation-limited gene therapy, costly electronic implants, and optogenetics or light-responsive drugs still facing limits under ordinary lighting.

SciTechDaily said the molecules restored saccadic eye movements and visually guided behavior in ambient white light in the reported models. Whether the approach will translate to people remains unknown; the writeup frames successful future human studies as a potentially more accessible option than current restoration technologies for advanced retinal degeneration.
