The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has granted a five-year exemption allowing self-driving truck developers, including Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI, to replace roadside warning devices with cab-mounted warning beacons, TechCrunch reports.

Federal rules ordinarily require a driver to place reflective warning triangles on the road within 10 minutes after a truck pulls over with trouble. Driverless trucks have no person aboard to perform that task. Companies had a temporary waiver while awaiting a decision; the exemption now authorizes the beacon alternative for five years.
