# AWS lets EC2 Image Builder reuse running instances for image builds

AWS says EC2 Image Builder can now build machine images using running instances from an Auto Scaling Group, skipping the time needed to launch and prepare a new instance. The feature is available in all AWS Regions at no additional cost.

Customers specify a group in their build configuration. Image Builder selects a running instance, applies the build components and creates the image; the group replenishes instances as builds consume them. The integration is optional, and pipelines without a configured group retain their existing behavior.
