Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang meets Commerce Secretary Lutnick amid China chip probe

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met Tuesday with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as the Trump administration investigates potential violations involving Nvidia chip exports to China, Axios reported, citing a source familiar with the matter. Huang is in Washington as the administration finalizes a framework that would give the government early access to the most advanced AI models before release. Officials are also weighing their approach to open-source AI and China. Huang is holding meetings across Washington this week, including with Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, and other members of Congress from both parties. An Nvidia spokesperson said Huang is in Washington to meet leaders on both sides of the aisle to discuss the company's work to strengthen the U.S. supply chain by producing $500B in American technology over four years and American leadership in AI, including open source. It was not immediately clear what Lutnick and Huang discussed. A Bureau of Industry and Security spokesperson told Axios last week the department is investigating potential Nvidia Blackwell chip export violations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week said sanctions and Entity List designations would be on the table when Chinese firms conduct industrial-scale distillation attacks that cross into IP theft. The administration is expected to unveil its AI framework by Aug. 1.
