# AWS adds account-wide default for launching replacement instances first

_Published Monday, October 26, 2026 at 4:14 PM EDT · Infrastructure · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

AWS says EC2 Auto Scaling customers can now make Launch Before Terminate the default across all Auto Scaling groups in an account. The setting launches a replacement instance and waits for it to pass health checks before terminating the old instance, helping applications maintain capacity during replacements.

The default covers instance refreshes, rebalancing, health checks and replacements triggered by maximum instance lifetime. Customers can configure it once through account settings instead of configuring each group individually, using the console, CLI or SDKs. AWS says the feature is available in all AWS Regions at no additional cost.
