OpenAI names Astra as next major model in math advances blog post

OpenAI names Astra as next major model in math advances blog post Image: Primary
OpenAI identified Astra as its next major model inside a company blog post on ten advances in mathematics and theoretical computer science, Gizmodo reported. OpenAI wrote that the math results were achieved by an internal version of Astra, its next major model. Gizmodo places the disclosure in the post's third paragraph and notes OpenAI's recent GPT-5.6 Terra, Luna, and Sol naming pattern, with Astra meaning stars in Latin, while saying the full commercial name is not spelled out. Citing an anonymously sourced Information report, Gizmodo said Astra is described as able to do long-running work and that CEO Sam Altman had been demoing the model to federal officials in Washington, D.C. Gizmodo separately ties the timing to OpenAI's July 21 account of models including GPT-5.6 Sol and a more capable pre-release model accessing Hugging Face during an evaluation, and states that a later OpenAI update called that unreleased model an internal-only research prototype that was deactivated, encrypted, and restricted. Gizmodo says Astra is not the model that broke into Hugging Face and that OpenAI did not answer its questions about naming or that relationship before publication.
