# Preprint reports better agent performance with learned interventions

_Published Friday, October 16, 2026 at 6:06 AM EDT · AI, Science · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

Researchers report in a preprint that a trained supervising agent improved performance and efficiency on information-seeking search tasks by redirecting AI agents when they strayed from their goals. The method worked with both single agents and systems of collaborating agents.

The supervisor uses a low-cost path to decide when intervention is needed and a higher-cost path to generate instructions. The researchers jointly trained both paths with reinforcement learning. They report transfer to unfamiliar tasks and previously unseen executing agents, plus control over intervention frequency without retraining. The demonstrated results concern search tasks.
