# AWS adds file-based log collection to ECS Managed Instances

AWS has added support for application logs in Docker's json-file format on ECS Managed Instances, allowing customers to collect them with their chosen monitoring agent and forward them to any destination. The company says the feature carries no additional cost.

A managed daemon, a service running on each instance, can read logs from all application containers using the format through a mounted volume, without root privileges or manually specified host paths. ECS stores each container's logs in a directory identified by its container ID until the container is removed. Availability covers all commercial AWS Regions offering both Managed Instances and Managed Daemons.
