# Robot hazard alarm detects 85 events versus 26 for best baseline

Researchers report in an arXiv preprint that a runtime alarm for off-road robots detected 85 of 142 hazard events, compared with 26 for the best of nine adapted baselines. The evaluation covered five unseen sites, with every method tuned to ten false alarms per hour.

The system, CUSP, learns from driving logs that end in human intervention. Researchers separately label the earlier moment when a human judges driving unsafe, then train a visual model to estimate that risk and accumulate its predictions into alarms.

The sites included two with autonomous driving and three with teleoperation. The reported detection advantage came from hazards that the navigation model's signals missed.
