Generative Bionics unveils Gene.01 humanoid with collision-preventing smart skin

The Gene.01's 'skin' can sense you coming before you're anywhere near it Image: Primary
Italian startup Generative Bionics introduced Gene.01, a humanoid wrapped in sensing skin that tracks touch, temperature, proximity, and force so the robot can adjust movements before and during contact with people on factory floors, New Atlas reported. The company said the same sensors let workers physically guide the arm to teach tasks and calibrate grip force, addressing a problem that is hard to learn from video alone. Gene.01 grows out of Italian Institute of Technology research published in Nature Machine Intelligence, and Generative Bionics said it is the first industrial platform to apply that peer-reviewed method to a fully sensor-covered humanoid. Built under a "Physical AI" approach that tunes hardware and movement control together, Gene.01 is framed as a base platform with task-specific AI, exterior adaptation, and swappable end effectors. Generative Bionics has a strategic alliance with Germany's Synapticon on European-made actuators and has raised an US$81 million seed round led by CDP Venture Capital, with AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT, and Tether participating. A first application is underway with shipbuilder Fincantieri on a welding humanoid for shipyards.
