Waymo announced plans to bring its driverless taxi service to Toronto, its first Canadian city, with first riders targeted for 2028. Ontario has approved the company to join its autonomous vehicle testing pilot, The Canadian Press reported.

Human drivers will initially take its cars onto Toronto streets in the coming days to map roads. Trained staff will then test the vehicles from behind the wheel. Element Fleet Management will handle fleet maintenance, charging and readiness for riders.

The initial operations involve human drivers. Critics cited by The Canadian Press say autonomous cars still struggle with heavy traffic and bad weather, making Toronto's winters a test.
