Rep. Yassamin Ansari called on November 4 for Democrats to prioritise a pause on advanced AI development, federal regulation and a ban on artificial superintelligence after winning both chambers of Congress.

The proposed framework would create a cabinet-level Department of Artificial Intelligence to oversee safety rules and model reviews. Companion bills, S. 5493 and H.R. 10538, would restrict systems trained on more than 10^25 operations until a federal review process operates, with penalties reaching 20 years in prison. Both bills remain in committee.
