Researchers at East China Normal University engineered an Escherichia coli strain with a glucose-responsive regulator that produces GLP-1, creating an orally deliverable probiotic intended to respond to blood-glucose changes.

The published study reported early trials in mice and diabetic macaques in which the system worked as intended, with no harmful effects indicated. The approach aims to avoid sustained high dosing by producing an insulin-raising hormone only when glucose reaches a threshold. Human trials have not begun, and its ability to compete with existing treatments remains untested.
