# AWS adds event-triggered S3 retention to US GovCloud regions

_Published Friday, October 2, 2026 at 6:08 PM EDT · Infrastructure · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

AWS made S3 Object Lock variable retention with event holds available in its US-East and US-West GovCloud regions. The feature protects stored objects against rewriting or deletion while an event hold is active, then starts a specified retention period when the hold is released.

This supports requirements tied to events such as contract closings or audit completion. Unlike legal holds, removing an event hold does not immediately end protection. Cohasset Associates assessed the capability for environments subject to SEC Rule 17a-4(f), FINRA Rule 4511 and CFTC Regulation 1.31.
