Quantinuum researchers demonstrated quantum information storage with as few as five errors per million qubit uses on the company's Helios-1 computer, New Scientist reports. Similar past experiments produced hundreds of errors per million uses.

The 98-qubit machine combines corrective laser pulses with a "colour code" that groups physical qubits into more reliable logical qubits. Errors fell twelve-fold when a logical qubit grew from seven to 19 physical qubits, with the same reduction when it grew from 19 to 37.

A simple mathematical operation produced about seven errors per 100,000 qubit uses. Whether the low error rates persist during more complex operations remains unresolved.
