Jake Archibald's comparison of current image encoders found that AVIF usually produced smaller files than JPEG XL for lossy web photos. At default encoding effort, the best JPEG XL version was typically 15-25% larger; at maximum effort, the gap was typically 6-20%.

The tests used released encoders on an M4 Pro MacBook Pro. JPEG XL typically took 2-3x as long to decode at medium quality, although the gap narrowed at very high quality. JPEG XL also offered distinct advantages: it could shrink existing JPEGs by 9-20% without further loss and produced smaller files in lossless comparisons.
