Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers report that simulated inertial-fusion-energy implosions held their yield as controlled asymmetry increased until reaching a critical threshold, after which performance fell sharply and ignition failed. The team scaled the design behind the National Ignition Facility's first ignition shot to a capsule designed to produce about 30 megajoules, using 2D radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. The work examines how future plants could balance yield against tolerance for target and laser imperfections.
