HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Hachette are incorporating AI into publishing workflows without public disclosures or author consent, WIRED reported based on interviews with more than two dozen workers. Employees described using Claude and ChatGPT for publicity copy, agent emails, cover art and marketing materials, often at executives' direction.

Simon & Schuster confirmed that employees can access a limited number of approved enterprise AI tools, with use optional. Hachette said it supports operational uses but prohibits creative uses, including communications with authors and partners.

A HarperCollins source said its legal team told editors not to paste full manuscripts into online language models.
