CNN reported that the United States narrowly avoided boarding a Chinese ship after a Special Operations Command analyst submitted an "entirely false" intelligence report generated with AI tools.

The report said the vessel was transporting nuclear arms program components through the Middle East, according to four sources cited by CNN. The military was preparing to intercept and board the ship with air support before officials found a chatbot had inaccurately identified the cargo.

One source told CNN the episode "almost started a war." The analyst used a chatbot to analyze the ship's manifest, fusing open-source intelligence with secret signals intelligence in government holdings.
