# CERN begins reconfiguring ISOLDE line for 2-GeV proton beams

CERN is upgrading the transfer line between its Proton Synchrotron Booster and the ISOLDE isotope facility to deliver 2-GeV proton beams, replacing a configuration designed for 1 GeV and operated at 1.4 GeV since the 2000s. The higher beam energy is intended to increase production yields for exotic isotopes used in research.

Crews have extracted ten magnets, including dipoles weighing 8.5 tonnes, and will reuse some existing units while installing others that meet the new energy requirements. The work is still underway, so the source does not establish that 2-GeV beam operations have begun.
