Researchers at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and the University of Southampton developed a flat, ribbon-like silica optical fiber for sensing pressure and temperature. Their proof-of-concept pressure sensor, tested to 0.40 MPa, showed up to three orders of magnitude greater sensitivity than one comparable circular fiber design. The team also drew more than 120 meters of the fiber from one experimental preform and reported a metal-filled version with enhanced temperature sensing.
