Australia releases draft online duty-of-care rules

Australia's government released draft Digital Duty of Care legislation for targeted consultation on September 8. The proposal would require digital service providers to meet minimum safety standards and document measures addressing harms to Australian users. Social platforms would have to notify users of a choice between an algorithmically personalised default feed and a feed of followed friends and creators. Online games, apps and AI chatbots would face requirements to protect under-18s from harmful content and features. eSafety could issue removal notices for nudify services, while noncompliance could draw penalties up to A$109.2 million. The government says it plans to introduce legislation this year.
