Attackers alter European supermarket refrigeration controls, forcing food withdrawals

Attackers alter European supermarket refrigeration controls, forcing food withdrawals Image: Primary
Attackers remotely changed supermarket refrigeration settings across European countries overnight into November 2, warming fridges and freezers and forcing some stores to discard food or remove it from sale. Danfoss said its refrigeration controls were involved; no chain reported more than several dozen affected stores. Attackers switched some Belgian units into defrost mode, while an ICA store in Sweden said its temperature settings had been raised to 50°C. Danfoss said affected Dutch systems used default passwords and lacked secure network protection. Authorities had not identified the attackers, and a link to earlier attacks in France remained unknown.
