NSA using Anthropic's Mythos AI model despite Pentagon tensions
The National Security Agency is using Anthropic's new Mythos Preview artificial intelligence model despite ongoing tensions between the AI company and the Pentagon, according to a report.
Axios cited two sources familiar with the matter who said the NSA is among approximately 40 organizations granted access to Mythos Preview. The model was announced in early April and described as "strikingly capable at computer security tasks."
The development follows a February order from the Trump administration directing all government agencies to stop using Anthropic's services. The directive came after the company declined to adjust certain safeguards for military applications during contract negotiations.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently met with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles to discuss the model. The White House characterized the meeting as "productive and constructive," though President Trump told reporters he had "no idea" about it.
The AI company remains engaged in legal disputes with the Department of Defense after being designated a "supply chain risk" in March. Anthropic obtained a preliminary injunction against the designation in one court while another court denied its motion to lift the label.
