Wolfspeed announced the commercial introduction of transparent silicon carbide technology for augmented reality, quantum computing and other optical applications. The company says its optical-grade substrates are engineered to absorb little light and provide flat wafer surfaces. For augmented reality glasses, silicon carbide's high refractive index could let a single layer guide display light where stacked optics were previously needed, said optics expert Barry Silverstein. Wolfspeed also described potential quantum computing uses, including hosting quantum bits and transmitting information through light within one crystal; those applications were presented as possibilities.
