Grok Build 1.0: xAI Closes the Beta of Its Coding Agent

xAI shipped Grok Build 1.0 on August 7, 2026: the coding CLI leaves beta, but the model is unchanged. Elon Musk announced on X the release of Grok Build V1.0, the first stable version of xAI's terminal coding agent. The public changelog records build 1.0.0 on the same day, four days after 0.2.120 and less than three months after the project first appeared in early beta. The repository xai-org/grok-build has 24,346 stars and 4,625 forks as of August 7, 2026, numbers gathered in just over three weeks since the source code was published on July 14. Grok Build is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license and the code can be read in full, but the repository is set up so as not to accept outside work: issues are disabled and pull requests can only be opened by internal collaborators. The version number is about the CLI, not the model. Grok Build is two distinct things sharing the same name: on one side the harness, meaning the program written in Rust that manages the terminal, permissions, tools, and session; on the other, the model that reasons and writes the code. 1.0.0 is the version of the former. The model remains grok-build-0.1 for those going through the API, with a 256,000-token context window and pricing of 1 dollar per million input tokens and 2 for output, while the default agent in the CLI is Grok 4.5, the model Musk opened to the public in July without publishing benchmarks, with a declared context of up to 500,000 tokens.
