OpenAI is making big claims as it rolls out ChatGPT Health to everyone
Image: Primary OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Health to all logged-in U.S. users aged 18 and older on Thursday, allowing them to connect medical records and health-tracking data to the chatbot, the company announced.
During a briefing, OpenAI vice president of health product Ashley Alexander said the company's models are now capable of reasoning at levels that are better than clinician level. Health lead Karan Singhal later said he would temper that claim but noted individual studies from Harvard and Stanford have pointed in that direction.
The broader release follows the recent launch of GPT-5.6 Sol, which OpenAI calls its strongest model yet for health. ChatGPT Health will run on the company's latest models and is available across free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on the web and iOS. Users can now ask questions about connected medical information in the main chat experience rather than a dedicated tab.
ChatGPT will ask for permission before using health information to personalize responses and says all conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit. Users can review and change connected health data types, including post-visit notes, lab results, and medications from providers and services such as Apple Health, Weight Watchers, MyFitnessPal, and Function.
OpenAI notes that ChatGPT Health supports, not replaces, professional care. A Florida pastor sued OpenAI on Wednesday alleging ChatGPT provided extremely dangerous medical recommendations that led him to delay care for a pulmonary embolism.
