Surmodics acquires Alta Biomed's coating and testing business

Surmodics acquires Alta Biomed's coating and testing business Image: Primary
Surmodics has acquired Alta Biomed's business, adding surface technologies and testing services for medical devices that contact blood and tissue. It has assumed the company's Carlsbad, California, operations, creating a West Coast location closer to regional device developers. The acquisition includes PzF, an ultra-thin polymer coating designed to improve compatibility with blood. The technology has received six FDA clearances and one premarket approval and is commercialized in cardiovascular and embolization technologies. The Carlsbad facility also tests coating integrity, particles released by devices and performance in circulating human blood. Existing Alta Biomed programs will continue during integration, with engineering vice president Chris Nocera leading the site.
