Google Challenges Apple Intelligence With New Mac Gemini Upgrade

Google is bringing a new tool to macOS that lets users chat instantly with its Gemini Mac app in any desktop window following a single keypress. By doing so, the company is launching a direct competitor to Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT on the Mac desktop. The update includes an Intelligent dictation tool launched by long-pressing the Fn key that transcribes speech and removes filler words, and a Screen-aware reasoning feature that allows Gemini to understand on-screen content. In a demonstration, Google showed how users can give complex voice instructions referencing local files, such as drafting an email based on dietary requirements, restaurant menus and expenses policy, with Gemini synthesizing responses directly into documents. The tool can parse multiple local files without opening them, adjust outputs based on user corrections and place summarized text into documents when text is highlighted in any app. Google states the update mirrors features from its forthcoming Googlebooks and will be available on Mac with this release. By binding Gemini to the Fn key, the tool operates system-wide and can read files directly from Finder and output text into open windows without copy and paste, a capability Google says ChatGPT Desktop and Apple Intelligence currently lack. The company notes the Gemini app is strictly cloud-based, requiring a personal Google account and involving data retention and human review per its privacy policy, unlike Apple's on-device or Private Cloud Compute approach. Intelligent Dictation and Screen-aware Reasoning are rolling out worldwide from July 29 in English, with more languages promised later in 2026.
