Focused Ultrasound Opens Blood-Brain Barrier to Treat Brain Cancer
Image: Primary UVA Health researchers have demonstrated that focused ultrasound combined with microbubbles can open the blood-brain barrier to deliver drugs to glioma tumors. The study found glioma tissue showed equal or superior receptivity to focused ultrasound-mediated barrier opening compared to healthy brain tissue. Researchers used a high-resolution MRI protocol to track drug delivery and identified an optimal molecular size range for efficient uptake. The findings were announced by UVA Health on July 30, 2026.
