Senators accuse administration of unlawfully withholding surveillance ruling

Senators accuse administration of unlawfully withholding surveillance ruling Image: Primary
Senators Ron Wyden and Adam Schiff accuse the Trump administration of unlawfully withholding a surveillance court ruling as officials seek renewal of Section 702, WIRED reported. They demand an explanation and the names of responsible officials by November 6. The March ruling found that filters used to isolate Americans' intercepted messages constitute searches subject to legal safeguards and ordered the tools rebuilt. The administration's 180-day public-release review window ended September 13. Section 702 lapsed in June, but collection continues under the court's approval until March. Demand Progress and 22 other groups urged lawmakers Monday to reject renewal while required information remains withheld. The Justice Department is appealing portions of the ruling restricting filtering tools.
