Cursor launches Cursor Router Auto mode for cheaper frontier-quality model routing

Cursor announced Tuesday it is launching Cursor Router, an intelligent model router for teams and enterprises that automatically routes requests to the most capable model for each task. The company said the system delivers frontier-quality performance at a lower cost. Cursor said it observed strong results on production traffic across thousands of enterprise developers during an early access period. Customers achieved frontier performance at approximately 30% to 50% lower cost, and online A/B tests across millions of requests showed 60% savings. The router classifies each request based on query, context, task complexity and domain before a model runs. The router has three modes: Intelligence, Balance and Cost. Cursor said Auto Intelligence mode lands near Fable on user satisfaction at about 60% lower cost for teams while lifting satisfaction about 15% over Opus 4.8 at nearly the same cost. Auto Balance lands above Opus 4.8 on user satisfaction at about 36% lower cost. In early access, three high-volume accounts saved 30% to 50% on Auto-routed requests versus routing everything to Opus 4.8 with no decrease in quality. Admins can enable the router per team or group, choose which modes members can select, set the default and allow or block specific models. Cursor said the router is cache-aware in training and evaluation and designed to incorporate newer models as they are released.
