Infineon opens world's largest fab for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies in Dresden

Infineon Technologies AG opened its Smart Power Fab in Dresden several months ahead of schedule, the company announced. The new plant represents an investment of five billion euros, the largest single investment in Infineon's history and one of the largest investment projects in Germany, creating 1,000 new direct jobs. The facility doubles Infineon's manufacturing capacity at the Dresden site, creating what the company describes as the world's largest factory for intelligent power semiconductors and analog and mixed-signal technologies. CEO Jochen Hanebeck said the plant is opening at the right time to provide urgently needed capacity for key technologies including energy supply for AI data centers, software-defined vehicles and renewable energies. German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the investment shows that competitive, cutting-edge semiconductor production in Germany is possible and strengthens technological sovereignty and supply chain resilience in Europe. Federal Minister for Digital Transformation and Government Modernization Karsten Wildberger said the facility marks a milestone on Germany's path toward digital sovereignty. The Smart Power Fab uses digitalization to accelerate production, including a digital twin for planning and AI algorithms for system and process clearance. The plant requires no natural gas and aims to reintroduce approximately 90 percent of water used into circulation, with the potential to recover up to 45 percent of energy used.
