ACLU says police use AI travel alerts to initiate traffic stops

Police traffic stop Image: Primary
Police are using AI analysis of license plate sightings to flag drivers whose travel patterns appear suspicious, even without evidence of wrongdoing, the ACLU alleged in an October 26 report covered by Tom's Hardware. The report describes a woman who said an officer stopped her after a surveillance system flagged her cross-country movements. License plate readers record vehicle registrations, locations and timestamps. AI systems analyze those records for patterns and alert officers, who may then seek a minor traffic violation to justify a stop. The ACLU says officers have concealed the underlying reason in some documented cases.
