French court upholds orders requiring Meta to negotiate news payments

French court upholds orders requiring Meta to negotiate news payments Image: Primary
A Paris appeals court rejected Meta's challenge to emergency orders requiring it to resume payment negotiations with French news publishers, Reuters reported. The decision leaves interim measures imposed by France's competition authority in July in place. Meta must negotiate fairly, disclose how much money its social networks make and how they use news, and refrain from reducing news visibility while the case continues. The dispute concerns EU copyright rights that let publishers seek payment for reused journalism. The court said Meta's practices could constitute abuse of a dominant position. The competition authority has yet to decide whether Meta broke the law.
