OpenAI has paused its Stargate UK project, a joint infrastructure initiative with NVIDIA to build sovereign AI computing capabilities in Britain. The company cited high energy costs and regulatory challenges as reasons for the delay. The project was first announced in September 2025 as part of OpenAI's broader "OpenAI for Countries" initiative. Stargate UK was designed to enable the British government to run advanced AI models locally from data centers within the region. OpenAI had previously said this would be particularly valuable "for specialist use cases where jurisdiction matters." In a statement to Bloomberg, OpenAI said it still sees "huge potential for the UK's AI future" and that "AI compute is foundational to that goal." The company added it would "continue to explore Stargate UK and will move forward when the right conditions such as regulation and the cost of energy enable long-term infrastructure investment." The Stargate UK pause raises questions about similar partnerships OpenAI has announced with Australia, Greece, the UAE, Slovakia, Kazakhstan and other regions. It remains unclear whether those projects will also face delays. OpenAI's UK partnership originally launched as a strategic agreement with the British government months before the Stargate UK announcement. The initiative was part of the company's push to help countries develop sovereign AI infrastructure.
