Aarhus University's algorithm found a microwave pulse sequence delivering around 70% greater signal enhancement than the researchers' reference method in a complex model system. The laboratory study is a proof of concept. The system uses Bayesian optimization to test pulses on a sample, measure results and choose the next experiment. The pulses transfer spin order from electrons to atomic nuclei, strengthening nuclear magnetic resonance signals used to reveal molecular structure. Each optimization took from just under two days to almost five days. Effective sequences can be reused, reducing the repetitions needed for subsequent measurements.
