GMO urges customers to disconnect computers after ransomware threat

GMO urges customers to disconnect computers after ransomware threat Image: Primary
GMO Internet Group urged account holders to back up data and disconnect and shut down their computers before noon on October 27 after hackers threatened to leak customer information and launch ransomware, CoinCentral reported. The company refused a demand for about ¥8 billion ($51 million). The incident involved trading accounts at more than 70 securities firms, foreign-exchange providers and other businesses. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said servers for five foreign-exchange margin-trading services tied to GMO were breached; those companies suspended trading for affected account holders. GMO pledged to compensate victims for losses. After the deadline, the attackers claimed they had released information on one client, NHK reported.
