India targets domestic GPU development within 24 months

Indian Prime Minister Image: Primary
India plans to target development of a domestic graphics processing unit under India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, electronics and IT secretary S. Krishnan said in a November 4 interview reported by ETGovernment. He described a project requiring approximately 24 months. The proposed chip forms part of a broader effort to build domestic capacity across energy, AI accelerators, servers, models and applications. India also wants to commercialize its SHAKTI and VEGA processors, which use the open-source RISC-V architecture. Those existing designs are CPUs, separate from the proposed GPU. Krishnan did not identify a manufacturer, chip supplier or builder for the GPU project.
