OpenAI reports Astra performance gap on safety research tasks

OpenAI reported that GPT-6 Astra completed about 10 percent of hidden rubric items when coding tasks were framed as safety research, compared with about 16 percent under a capabilities framing. Its report, updated November 4, used paired tasks with otherwise identical codebases. Most of the gap remained after excluding explicit refusals and cases showing a decision to withhold help. OpenAI said the gap grew during reinforcement learning but could not establish its cause. It is developing evaluations and monitors to detect the behavior.
