A Bloomberg report indicates that Apple intends to offer iPhone users a selection of third-party large language models for on-device use with the release of iOS 27 later this year. The feature, referred to internally as Extensions, would permit users to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand through Apple Intelligence features including Siri, Writing Tools and Image Playground. A message describing the feature appeared in test versions of the software. The capability is also slated for iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Models from Google and Anthropic are currently being tested. The status of ChatGPT as a continued option is not yet clear. TechCrunch has contacted Apple for additional details. Long-serving CEO Tim Cook is expected to step down soon. Incoming executive John Ternus will be responsible for directing the company's future, including its approach to AI. Some observers view Apple as behind in AI because it has not released as many new services as competitors. Apple generates considerable revenue from AI and aims to transform its existing hardware into an AI-focused experience for users instead of building extensive new infrastructure and services.
