Nvidia and Amazon sign major chip deal for AI infrastructure
Image: Primary Nvidia has signed a multi-year agreement with Amazon Web Services to supply AI chips and related infrastructure. The chip designer is expected to deliver one million graphics processors to the cloud division through 2027. Additional technology for networking and data processing is also part of the arrangement.
Deliveries will begin this year and continue through the end of 2027. An Nvidia executive told Reuters on Thursday that the timeline extends the prior order confirmation from AWS, which had not previously detailed a schedule. The deal includes network solutions and specialized AI chips in addition to graphics processors.
AWS intends to apply the technology to process artificial intelligence workloads more efficiently. This includes inference tasks that generate responses and perform user operations in production settings. Nvidia stated that such processing benefits from a mix of chip architectures rather than reliance on one processor type.
AWS will integrate Nvidia networking equipment into its data centers. The approach combines external solutions with Amazon's own technology, differing from its prior emphasis on in-house networking. Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
