IonQ says CPU decoder handled tests with 408 logical qubits

IonQ says it tested a real-time quantum error correction decoder on conventional CPU hardware using benchmark circuits with up to 408 logical qubits and more than 31.5 million quantum operations. The company reported processing overhead as low as 0.02%. A decoder processes error information so a quantum computer can identify and correct faults during calculations. Running that work on conventional processors could help limit the supporting computing capacity needed as quantum systems grow. The reported figures come from IonQ's tests, rather than a demonstrated deployment of a fault-tolerant computer.
