Vibe Jam launches $35,000 competition for AI-assisted game development
Image: Primary Vibe Jam, an annual game development competition focused on AI-assisted creation tools, has opened submissions for its 2026 edition with $35,000 in prizes.
The competition, referred to as a "vibe coding" event, invites developers to create games using AI tools that assist with programming, art, sound, or design. The gold prize winner will receive $20,000. Submissions are open until May 1.
Last year's competition attracted more than 1,000 game submissions, according to organizer Pieter Levels. The event reflects the growing adoption of AI tools among independent game developers, who use large language models and generative AI to accelerate development timelines and reduce costs.
Vibe coding refers to the practice of using natural language prompts to generate code, allowing developers to build applications with minimal traditional programming. The term has gained traction alongside the proliferation of AI coding assistants from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
The competition is split into multiple categories, with judging criteria focusing on creativity, gameplay, and effective use of AI tools rather than technical programming skill alone. Winners will be announced following the submission deadline.
