Databricks: Only 19% of organizations have deployed AI agents to production
Only 19% of organizations have deployed AI agents in production environments, according to a new report from Databricks based on data from over 20,000 organizations including more than 60% of Fortune 500 companies.
The State of AI Agents 2026 report reveals a significant gap between discussion and deployment. While 67% of organizations report using AI-powered tools in some capacity, actual agent deployment remains limited. Databricks defines AI agents as autonomous systems capable of completing multi-step tasks without human intervention.
Despite low deployment rates, the report shows AI agents already generate 97% of database creation activity on the Databricks platform. This suggests that early adopters are deploying agents at significant scale, even as most organizations remain in evaluation phases.
The data indicates enterprise AI adoption follows a familiar pattern where infrastructure investment precedes widespread application deployment. Databricks notes that organizations currently testing agents represent a potential surge in production deployments over the next 18 months.
The findings provide a counter-narrative to industry hype around agentic AI, suggesting the technology remains in early adoption phases outside of technology-forward enterprises.
