Some WordPress sites remain exposed while installing security fix

Some WordPress sites remain exposed while installing security fix Image: Primary
Some WordPress sites remain vulnerable to server code execution while installing the fix for actively exploited CVE-2026-119977, researcher Umut Bayram warned. The update unpacks files using the site's existing updater, which can leave a temporary installer reachable at a predictable address. Bayram recommends blocking web access to wp-content/upgrade before updating. Complete update packages include installer files; partial packages expose the temporary installation only if they contain those files. WordPress can also fall back to a complete package when core files fail checksum checks or during a reinstall. After version 7.1.4 or a matching branch fix is installed, subsequent updates use randomized folder names. WP-CLI's update command uses the same updater and does not avoid the exposure.
