Anthropic Acquires Biotech AI Startup Coefficient Bio for Around $400 Million

Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio, a startup developing artificial intelligence tools for biology and drug discovery, in a deal valued at approximately $400 million, according to The Information. The acquisition marks Anthropic's first major move into the life sciences sector and signals the AI safety company's ambitions beyond its core large language model business. Coefficient Bio had been building a platform designed to help researchers accelerate biotech research using AI-driven analysis. The deal comes as AI labs race to apply foundation model capabilities to scientific discovery. Rivals including Google DeepMind, with its AlphaFold protein structure work, and Genentech have been deepening AI integration into drug development pipelines. Anthropic's purchase of Coefficient Bio positions the company to compete directly in that space. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers and has raised billions of dollars from investors including Amazon and Google. The company's Claude AI assistant has grown into a major enterprise product, and the Coefficient Bio deal suggests leadership is eyeing scientific AI as a growth vertical. Financial terms were not publicly disclosed. The Information, which first reported the acquisition, cited people familiar with the matter. Neither Anthropic nor Coefficient Bio responded to requests for comment at time of publication.
